Mid Century and Pine - Chests of Drawers

A lot of people own brown furniture, whether it's old quality pine or inherited Mid-Century pieces.  And I've painted LOTS of chests of drawers.  Here's a look at two typical pieces:

These two drawers have been painted with a white chalk paint when the drawers were removed.

The teak on the drawers is a lovely grain, so the drawers have been re-stained and then sealed to really bring through that design.

This type of Mid-Century furniture looks great, part painted in a strong, clean colour.

I also just finished painted a chest of drawers for a customer.  A nice piece of pine, but to get up to date and drop the broooooowwwwwn, I've painted all over in a soft white.

The handles were painted too, then a metallic wax was added for colour.

Simples!  Looking good and ready to roll :-)

The Big Red - French Painted Cocktail Cabinet

Oh my! How rare to find such a WONDERFUL cocktail cabinet!

I've called her The Big Red - if you think she looks good on the outside, wait till you see her faaaaabulous insides.  But first here's the previous very brown look... alright in her day I suppose.  Very 1960's.

But check out those legs! I spent some time painting her all over in a really strong, red, chalk paint.

Then fully sealed with clear and dark waxes before having some fun with the gilding.

When the doors open, you'll find the shelving and the original red cocktail sticks.

Martini sweetie?

Inside there are mirrors with two glass shelves and a light.

A customer was looking at the cabinet and I pulled the lower shelf out - it's mirrored too.  She said, "Oh my - it's got everything, including a coke snorting shelf!!"  Hahaha, I do love my customers :-)

Here's some pics that show those lovely legs and the way the gilding works with that yummy red colour.

In the shop now and looking for a VERY stylish home :-D

Stunning 1950s Wardrobes - White Chalk Paint

I had two beautiful French style, 1950s wardrobes for sale on my Facebook page (you can find naked furniture in the shop section here).  A customer bought both and asked me to repaint them in white with some shabbying and gilding.  Here's a good look at these lovely wardrobes before any work.

They're both solid wood with quality carved mouldings.

The 1950s ornate handles are faded but still wonderful inspiration.

Here's the smaller wardrobe... originally cream paint, this has faded and has started to flake away.

The larger wardrobe is in the same condition, both will need to have the flakes sanded away and some prep done before painting.

Both are spotless inside - and have the same hanging area and wood and glass cubbyhole shelving.

Well... what can I say, when the work started, there was a A LOT of stain blocking going on...
Both wardrobes needed quite a lot of prep, as after testing, it was clear the original wood stain/ treatment was going to bleed through into the chalk paint and cause discolouration.

But after painting, shabbying, gilding and that final waxing.. WOWEEEEEE!!!

These wardrobes have transformed into stunning pieces of furniture.

Already plastic wrapped, shipped and settled into their new home. Phew!!!

1950s Stag Head Bedside Cabinets

There's a lot of yummy turquoise and stag head furniture going through the shop lately...

I had these two bedside cabinets for sale on my Facebook page (you can find it here) and my client asked me to paint them in Antique Turquoise paint and add stag head handles and gilding.  Well I'd love to!!!

Here's the before - standing outside the shop - a really nice pair of 1950s bedside cabinets.  In great condition and ready for a new look.

After the hardware's removed and a few coats of that lovely turquoise chalk paint, they were finished with clear wax to seal.

I added gilded iron stag head handles... and did extra gilding onto the doors and around the tops, sides and feet.

Two VERY cute bedside cabinets ready for their new home :-)

Art Deco Style - Purple Painted Dressing Table

August is looking like another great month for commissions, this lovely Art Deco dressing table is a favourite example.  I've been using my Facebook page more often lately - for quick updates - you can find the link here - please add me as a friend and keep in touch :-)

Even before any work, this dressing table is just beeeeautiful.  When I picked it up, I really was unsure if this should be painted.  But there has been a lot of damage to the top from use and probably perfume spills over the years.  My customer loves it and wants it re-designed into a style that matches the rest of her bedroom furniture and colour scheme

So it was agreed that I'd paint all over in Amethyst - a lovely purple chalk paint - and then add soft silver wax.

Here's the paint when the silver is starting to be added to the drawers.  I was looking at the level of silver gilding and finish for the handles too.

Here she is when the silver wax has been added all over and before the handles have been put on.

Heavier silver has been added to the bottom of the dressing table and the curving upper drawers.  Not easy to get the picture right, so here's another to show of 'the bling'.

Nothing too heavy... My client loves it and I must say it's been a great little piece to work on.

These fabulous drawers pull out from the side hinge - such a great design, so feminine.

The handles have a little amethyst gilding added to enhance the floral design and the drawer tops are silver gilded.

Isn't she cute?

Not leaving the mirror out either, it's been painted and gilded - so the floral theme has been picked out here too.

What can I say, just a beautiful piece of bedroom furniture :-)
