Gorgeous Green - Painted Chest of Drawers

I knew as soon as I saw this chest of drawers that he needed a really gooood, strong look...

I liked his curved sides and those cute Queen Anne legs, so after lots of pondering, I settled on greens and golds.

Here's a finished pic in the shop - and here's what I did:-

I removed all the hardware and painted bright green chalk paint, all over.

Two coats later, it was time to start waxing.  I used a clear wax and then started to add dark brown.  The dark brown wax is like boot polish.  You work it into the paint to get the 'aged look'.  It darkens down the bright green to this lovely, fresh grass colour.

The dark wax has worked into the paint and adds texture.  I've added gilding to the feet and areas around the drawers.  Then buffed up the wax to get the shine I was looking for.

The wax top looks really rich and gives a soft reflection.

I chose black and antique gold ceramic handles and put some gilding onto the drawer tops to finish.

I just love this piece now.

I think I'm going to have to start going through rainbow colours for May - I'm INSPIRED!!!

He's in the shop now and looking for a new home :-)

I can imagine this unique piece of furniture in the hall with a statement lamp... perfect...

Bedside Cabinets Painted Grey - with White Chalk Wax

I'm on constant look out for bedside cabinets!  I came across these two recently and have refurbed them  quickly and easily.

Here's a 'before' pic.

These aren't particularly old pieces of furniture and the previous owner had a bash at painting one of the cabinets, then obviously gave up after a few brush strokes.  Chalk paint and the waxes really are easy to use - here's the story...

I removed the hardware and then used Autentico's Foggy Venice paint - which is a popular 'Paris' grey colour, to paint all over.  The brass handles were painted too - then gilded with some silver wax.

Once dry, the cabinets receive a generous coating of creamy clear wax and then the white chalk wax is brushed on.  It picks out the texture of the paint and I've made sure it highlights corners to give that 'limed' finish.

The tops of the cabinets show the white wax effect very well.  Just use more clear wax to remove any unwanted white and to achieve show-through of the grey paint.

Only replace the handles after all the waxing is finished and dry.

Easy and fun to do - don't give up on your old furniture :-)

Spring Collection in Blues and Golds

What's been going on at the shop?  I've been really bad at posting this month, but there has been A LOT of painting in Duck Egg Blue and Gold.  Spring's well underway, the sun's been shining... and we've been busy with customers who want to BRIGHTEN everything up!  Here's some pics for you and a 'before and after' story.

This tallboy chest of drawers might look on it's last legs BUT with a bit of blue and gold treatment...  lovely handles and detail :-)...

Can easily be turned into a really interesting piece of furniture.  I've used Autentico's chalk paint - Troubled Waters for the overall colour.  Then added a mix of clear and gold metallic waxes to finish.  The handles have been worked on so the floral blossom design is now seen.

Chalk paint sticks to any surface, so if you've got great handles - don't change them!

The blue wardrobe has lots of gilding added - it's a lovely 1930s design, inside there's a hanging rail and shelves.

As the sun's out, skies are blue and the cherry blossom is blooming, here's some quick pics from the park.

I hope this year will be a good year for the bees...

The Grey Wagtail's out too... this one must be a female if I've identified her properly...

The RSPB has a great site for identifying birds - you can link through here
It took me a while to identify this fella - known as a Dipper.  When you find the bird you're looking for, there's lots of info including an audio link to hear their song :-)

Have a great weeeeeeek!!!

Very Vanilla - White Chalk Wax Armoire

I can't believe it's 12th March already!  Spring is here, the light is changing and everything is beginning to look bright again :-)  So time to DITCH the old brown look!

This lovely Armoire wardrobe is typical of 1950s design.  Great quality if you can find it, this one by local manufacturer, Beithcraft.

Armoires can turn into brilliant storage space for a children's room.

Two drawers below, then inside shelves and a hanging space - perfect!

I removed all the hardware and painted this one all over in Autentico's Paris White chalk paint.  It's a yummy, rich vanilla white.

Once dry a white chalk wax was added all over to give a subtle 'limed' French finish.  The drawer and cupboard edges have gold gilding.

The hardware's been changed to uplifting gold and crystal.

And the feet have been given a makeover too - just some wee gold slippers.

The vanilla and white wax look is so refreshing.

In the shop now... meanwhile out in the park, sun's shining, I had to take some snaps for you!

I've hardly been out with my camera at all this year - it's been very dark and rainy.

But now the sun's out, the skies are very bright blue.

Loving the gilded thistle on this lamp :-)

Bring out the bling Glasgow!!

Make it Red! Raspberry Painted Cupboard

It's very satisfying to take a old piece of furniture like this and turn it into something so very different. This piece from the 1930s has lovely old Bakelite handles, but sadly one is broken so a total overhaul is needed.

Tralaaaa...  this is just a quick snap taken in the shop but a great transformation.

After a few coats of Autentico's Ruby red chalk paint, dark wax has been used, it tones down the hot red colour to more of a raspberry, adds aging and - lots of character.

The handles have been changed to the ceramic clock faces.

And gilding's been added across the drawer and cupboard tops.

Light gilding highlights the cabriole feet.  I just love this raspberry colour, it's so uplifting :-)
