Carved Chinese Chest in Red Chalk Paint

I really do like to paint furniture and give it an Oriental look.  This fantastic blanket-box sized chest I picked up is a favourite.

Here's the 'before' look... all that lovely carved work seems lost in brown.

I set out by giving a few coats of Autentico's Ruby red chalk paint.  This is how it looks then

It dries to a very matt and fairly bright red.

Then black and clear waxes have been used to work through the designs and WOW, what a transformation!

I gilded the lock on the front with some old gold.

And here's a look at some of the carving - on every side of this gorgeous chest and so much detail.

Handles are carved into the sides and on the front of the lid.

Already causing quite a stir - it's in the shop now and ready for a new home :-)

Chouchou Blanket Box

The REVEAL - an old blanket box gets a make over.

I've had this blanket box some time.  Here's the before pic, quite a bit of damage to the varnish and a white mark made by a hot mug of tea!

Next, here's the box painted with Chalk Paint, it's Paloma which is a lovely soft lavender or violet.

I didn't want to experiment with too much distressing of paint with this piece, I love the victorian style graphics on the site of The Graphics Fairy and have transferred two here on the lid, then painted over in antique gold.

I added a final bee to the front of this box then did a small bit of 'distressing' around the lid and lip along the bottom of the box.  Then used clear wax to finish - it added a lovely soft shine.

So here it is, my finished blanket box, I'm really pleased with it!!
